2009: Paintings
I think about Heidegger’s Origin of the Work of Art a lot. He describes the world that seeks to reveal itself. The world seeking to disclose is in infinite conflict with the earth which efforts to conceal. There is a dance to this conflict, a sway between opening and closing, and we are afforded glimpses into the unconcealed within the rift between world and earth. The rift grows and shrinks amid this struggle but never opens completely or for long.
I wanted to understand this in my work, through an image that seeks display in conflict with a frame that frustrates showing. The only glimpse is through imperfect language.
